Know Before You Go

Best Time to Visit: I highly advise visiting during the winter. Spring & summer months (April, May, June) are extremely hot, and July through September are monsoon season. December to March is ideal!

How to get to Tulum: Tulum has a dedicated International airport but with fewer flight options. Cancun International airport is another popular option to fly into. From Cancun you can take a taxi, rent a car or ride the ADO bus(popular and inexpensive option)to reach Tulum.

Currency: Mexican Pesos – MXN (Most places also accept USD)

Language: Spanish is most commonly spoken in Mexico, however in most tourist places and hotels/restaurants, you can find people who speak English. You can use Google Translate app to efficiently communicate if you don’t know the tongue.

Getting Around in Tulum

If you are staying in Zona Hotelera and plan to explore the area and nearby resorts, you can do so on foot or by renting bikes from local stores. However, if you plan to venture further, here are a few options:

Rental Car: The most expensive option, but it offers the greatest flexibility for exploring the area. We rented a car during our visit and found it very convenient for trips to cenotes and Chichen Itza, allowing us to make numerous stops and adjust our plans as we went. You can rent a car online before arriving or visit a rental company before exiting the airport.

ADO Public Bus: Mexico is well-connected by the public transportation system, ADO. You can use ADO buses to travel from Cancun to Tulum and around the area. Tickets can be purchased at the station or online at ADO’s website. This is the most affordable option.

Taxi: While there is no Uber in Mexico, taxis are widely available. However, if you plan to make multiple stops, this option can become quite expensive.

Collectivo: Typically used by locals, collectivos are small vans that transport people in smaller groups around the area. This is the cheapest option, but it may take longer due to frequent stops to drop off passengers.

Bike/Scooter/ATV Rental: Renting bikes, scooters, or ATVs is a fun way to get around the city, the beach, and nearby tourist spots such as cenotes and ancient ruins. Rentals can be arranged through your hotel or at rental shops along the Hotel Zone.

Where To Stay

Before choosing where to stay in Tulum, consider what activities and experiences are most important to you. If a relaxing beachfront vacation is your goal, look for accommodation along Tulum Beach, where you can expect to pay resort prices.

In contrast, Tulum town offers more budget-friendly options, such as hostels and affordable hotels. Here, you’ll be close to restaurants, cafes, and shops. There are also a few upscale hotels in town, but be prepared to use a bike or other transportation to reach the beach or nearby ruins.

Azulik: An eco-friendly resort offering luxurious treehouse villas with stunning beachfront views and a focus on sustainability and privacy.

Nomade Tulum: A chic, bohemian retreat featuring stylish beachfront tents and suites, with a strong emphasis on wellness and relaxation.

Be Tulum: A boutique hotel combining modern luxury with a tropical vibe, offering elegant accommodations on a pristine beach.

La Zebra Colibri Boutique Hotel: A beachfront hotel with stylish rooms, a lively atmosphere, and excellent local cuisine.

Papaya Playa Project: Known for its vibrant, rustic-chic design, this hotel offers beachfront bungalows, a lively beach club, and a focus on creative, communal experiences.
