The Ultimate Tulum Travel Guide – 5 Day Itinerary

WELCOME TO TULUM, a slice of paradise nestled along the pristine Caribbean coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. This stunning destination is quickly becoming a favorite among travelers seeking a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Tulum offers the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, with its breathtaking beach area known as Tulum Beach or Zona Hotelera—providing an idyllic setting for sunbathing, swimming in crystal-clear waters, and savoring fresh seafood and authentic Mexican cuisine at luxury hotels, boutique shops, and charming restaurants.

But Tulum’s allure extends beyond its stunning shoreline. Venture inland, and you’ll discover a treasure trove of ancient Mayan ruins and natural wonders, including refreshing cenotes perfect for cooling off. Whether you’re drawn to its pristine beaches or intrigued by its rich history and natural beauty, Tulum promises a memorable experience that combines relaxation with discovery. Know Before You Go

Getting Around in Tulum

If you are staying in Zona Hotelera and plan to explore the area and nearby resorts, you can do so on foot or by renting bikes from local stores. However, if you plan to venture further, here are a few options:

Rental Car: The most expensive option, but it offers the greatest flexibility for exploring the area. We rented a car during our visit and found it very convenient for trips to cenotes and Chichen Itza, allowing us to make numerous stops and adjust our plans as we went. You can rent a car online before arriving or visit a rental company before exiting the airport.

ADO Public Bus: Mexico is well-connected by the public transportation system, ADO. You can use ADO buses to travel from Cancun to Tulum and around the area. Tickets can be purchased at the station or online at ADO’s website. This is the most affordable option.

Taxi: While there is no Uber in Mexico, taxis are widely available. However, if you plan to make multiple stops, this option can become quite expensive.

Collectivo: Typically used by locals, collectivos are small vans that transport people in smaller groups around the area. This is the cheapest option, but it may take longer due to frequent stops to drop off passengers.

Bike/Scooter/ATV Rental: Renting bikes, scooters, or ATVs is a fun way to get around the city, the beach, and nearby tourist spots such as cenotes and ancient ruins. Rentals can be arranged through your hotel or at rental shops along the Hotel Zone.

Where To Stay

Before choosing where to stay in Tulum, consider what activities and experiences are most important to you. If a relaxing beachfront vacation is your goal, look for accommodation along Tulum Beach, where you can expect to pay resort prices.

In contrast, Tulum town offers more budget-friendly options, such as hostels and affordable hotels. Here, you’ll be close to restaurants, cafes, and shops. There are also a few upscale hotels in town, but be prepared to use a bike or other transportation to reach the beach or nearby ruins.

Day 1 – Check in and explore the vibrant culinary scene of Tulum

Check into a hotel along the Hotel Zone

Dune Boutique Hotel in Tulum offers a luxurious yet intimate retreat nestled along the stunning coastline. This chic property boasts elegantly designed rooms with a blend of modern amenities and rustic charm, ensuring a comfortable and stylish stay. The rooms are spacious with private terraces ( you can also upgrade to the one with a plunge pool) where guests can enjoy pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters. The hotel’s on-site restaurant serves delicious fresh seafood and local specialties, providing a delightful dining experience without the need to venture far from your room.

Dune Boutique Hotel is centrally located in the Zona Hotelera, making it easy to walk or bike to Tulum’s vibrant culinary scene. You’ll have access to an array of renowned restaurants, trendy cafes, and lively bars. If you’re seeking a serene escape while also wanting to explore the city’s diverse dining options, Dune Boutique Hotel provides an ideal base for both relaxation and exploration.

Brunch party at Taboo Beach Club

Change into your bikini or crochet fits and put on your party hats, becuase you don’t wanna miss a day party in Tulum. Imagine arriving at Taboo Beach Club in Tulum as the sun starts to warm the powdery white sands, casting a golden hue over the turquoise waters. The vibe here is effortlessly chic, with plush sunbeds and elegant cabanas dotting the shore, inviting you to unwind and soak in the stunning views of the Caribbean Sea as the DJ curates a perfect house soundtrack.

You can also dine at Taboo in the evening, where you’ll be captivated by a nightly violin performance that adds a touch of elegance to your dining experience. The music creates a mesmerizing ambiance, making every moment unforgettable as you enjoy your meal.

Art installations at Escultura ven a la Luz

After the brunch, walk up the street to visit one of the Tulum’s quintessential spots – Escultura Ven a la Luz – A breathtaking art installation by South African artist Daniel Popper, located in a garden outside the hotel Ahau Tulum. Standing nearly 10 meters tall, the sculpture is made of wood, rope, and greenery, depicting a female figure opening her chest to reveal a lush sanctuary within symbolizing a connection between humanity and nature. It is truly an iconic landmark in Tulum and you need to snap atleast a few photos to add to your Tulum memories.

Dinner + Drinks at Ilios Greek Restaurant

Ilios Greek Restaurant in Tulum offers an unforgettable dining experience that blends the flavors of Greece with the vibrant energy of the Caribbean. As we dined, we were treated to a spectacular fire show, where performers skillfully manipulated flames, adding a dramatic flair to the evening.

When it comes to the menu, Ilios serves up some of the best Greek dishes in Tulum. Start with their fresh, flavorful tzatziki and hummus, served with warm pita bread. For mains, the moussaka is a hearty, traditional favorite, while the grilled lamb chops are a succulent, savory option. Don’t miss the baklava for dessert—it’s simply the best!

Day 2 – Morning Yoga & Exploring Tulum Centro

Morning yoga or healing session.

Start your day with a peaceful yoga class by the beach, letting the sound of the waves set the tone for relaxation. Tulum is home to numerous wellness centers and beachfront studios offering yoga, meditation, and holistic therapies that blend ancient practices with the serene natural surroundings. Whether you’re new to yoga or a seasoned yogi, you’ll find classes tailored to your level, often accompanied by the gentle sounds of nature. In addition, Tulum offers healing sessions like sound baths, temazcal ceremonies, and energy healing, inviting you to connect deeply with yourself and the tranquil beauty of the area.

A few of our favorite yoga sessions were at Sanará Tulum, Holistika Tulum(offering a jungle style setting) and Amansala Eco-Chic Resort(known for their Bikini Bootcamp)

Explore Tulum Centro

Now that you’ve explored Tulum beach, head to Tulum Centro, where the vibe is more local and affordable. The beach and town areas are distinctly different, with the town offering a more chill atmosphere compared to the glamorous beach. You can rent a bike or scooter in the hotel Zone and ride up to Tulum Centro which is about 20-30 mins.

In Tulum Centro, you can immerse yourself in the local culture by exploring bustling markets filled with handmade crafts, colorful textiles, and delicious street food. Admire the vibrant street art scattered throughout the town, or relax with a coffee at a chic cafe. You can also visit the Centro at night to experience the lively nightlife with trendy bars and traditional cantinas, where you can sip on a refreshing margarita or dance the night away to Latin beats.

Relax at Coco Unlimited Beach Club

Coco Unlimited Beach Club is known for its inviting swings that hang by the ocean-facing bar, adding a playful touch to your beach day. These swings offer a unique way to enjoy your drinks while taking in stunning views of the turquoise waters. The bar itself is a centerpiece of the club, serving up a range of refreshing cocktails made with fresh, local ingredients.

With the sound of the waves and a gentle sea breeze, the swings and bar at Coco Unlimited create an idyllic, relaxed vibe that’s perfect for unwinding and soaking in the beauty of Tulum’s coast.

Dinner at Bagatelle Tulum

Get ready yet another party at Bagatelle Tulum, a premier destination for French Mediterranean cuisine and vibrant nightlife. The restaurant boasts an elegant, beachy decor with natural tones, lush greenery, and an open-air design that enhances the coastal charm.

As evening falls, Bagatelle comes to life with energetic performances, including live music and DJs, creating a festive atmosphere; making it popular among the bachelorette girlies. The food shines with fresh, high-quality ingredients and flavors that evoke the Mediterranean coast and our favorites were Mediterranean Sea Bass and Grilled Lamb Chops. So delicious!

Day 3 – Casa Gitano & visit Sfer Ik Museum

Check into Casa Gitano

Casa Gitano exudes a captivating bohemian charm, creating a unique and inviting atmosphere that blends effortlessly with Tulum’s laid-back vibe. The resort’s decor is a stunning mix of eclectic and artisanal elements, featuring handcrafted wooden furniture, vibrant textiles, and carefully curated artwork that reflects a relaxed, boho aesthetic. The use of natural materials and earthy tones enhances the tranquil ambiance, making Casa Gitano a perfect retreat for those looking to unwind in a stylish setting.

We checked in to the hotel, dropped off our bags and directly hit the beach club for ocean views + spicy Margs! Adorned with massive disco balls, black furniture, rustic wood elements and bar with mirror counter tops – it was giving beach disco and and I was here for it! You have to try their Tacos and Margaritas – they were absolutely spicy and delicious.

Visit the Sfer Ik Museum at Uh May

Located in the heart of the Mayan jungle, the museum emerges like a hidden sanctuary, blending seamlessly with its natural surroundings. The architectural design is stunning, featuring organic curves, woven materials, and large, open spaces that invite the outside in, creating a harmonious connection between art and nature.

Inside, the museum showcases contemporary art installations that are both thought-provoking and immersive, making it a must-visit for art lovers and curious travelers alike. After exploring the exhibits, you can dine at the onsite restaurant, which offers a menu inspired by the local environment and seasonal ingredients. 

If you don’t wish to drive up to Uh May, you can also visit its sister museum at Hotel Azulik, which is just as beautiful.

Sunset apertif at Nomade Tulum

Cool off the evening and enjoy a mersemerizing sunset on the beach – head to Nomade Tulum. Nestled right on the sand, La Popular(beach restaurant) is an open-air oasis with stunning views of the turquoise sea. The decor is bohemian and earthy, with wooden tables, woven chairs, and soft lighting that create a cozy, relaxed atmosphere. We loved their sunset margaritas and fish fingers.

Dinner at Gitano Jungle

An enchanting dining experience deep in the Tulum jungle -I’ll take it!!! Gitano Jungle’s design is a captivating blend of natural elements and modern luxury, featuring a striking glass bar that lets you sip cocktails while surrounded by the verdant foliage. 

The menu boasts standout dishes like spicy tuna tacos, grilled octopus, and mango-glazed pork ribs. With its vibrant flavors and immersive jungle vibes, Gitano provides a memorable setting that captures the essence of Tulum’s unique charm.

Day 4 – Road trip to Chichen Itza and Yucatan Peninsula

Get ready for an adventurous road trip! You can explore one of the 7 Wonders of the World, swim in stunning underground cenotes, and discover a new town. It’s going to be a long but exciting day. You can pick from one of the many tours to visit tour and Chichen Itza and plunge into a few cenotes and here are few options we explore – Chichen itza tour with cenotes and Chichen Itza tour + Valladoilid. But if you’ve rented a car like we did, you’ll have the flexibility to customize your trip and visit the cenotes on your personal list.

Start your day early to beat the tour bus crowds at Chichen Itza, giving you ample time to explore at your own pace. Remember, Valladolid is one hour behind Tulum, so plan your arrival time accordingly to make the most of your visit.

Visit the ancient ruins at Chichen Itza

Visiting Chichen Itza is an awe-inspiring experience, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of ancient Mayan civilization. The iconic El Castillo pyramid dominates the site, showcasing intricate architectural prowess and astronomical alignment. As you wander through the ruins, you’ll encounter fascinating structures like the Temple of the Warriors and the Great Ball Court, each revealing stories of a bygone era. 

Swim in Cenote Ik Kil

After exploring Chichen Itza, unwind with a refreshing dip in Cenote Ik Kil, just a 10-minute drive away. This breathtaking cenote is celebrated for its stunning beauty, featuring cascading vines that frame its edges and create a tranquil, lush setting. The crystal-clear, deep waters are ideal for a revitalizing swim, and natural stone formations offer an adventurous twist, letting you climb and dive into the cenote. It’s the perfect way to relax and rejuvenate after your archaeological adventure.

Visit the Cenote Suytun

On your way back, visit the Instagram-famous Cenote Suytun, renowned for its unique rock formations, including dramatic stalactites and stalagmites. The platform extending into the crystal-clear waters offers the perfect spot for stunning photos, especially between 12 pm and 2 pm when natural light streams through the cenote’s ceiling, creating a magical atmosphere.

Explore the town of Valladolid

Exploring the town of Valladolid is a vibrant experience, with its charming streets lined with colorful colonial buildings and lively markets. The town’s main square is dominated by the stunning San Bernardino Church, an architectural gem that adds historic charm to the area.

You can wander through the bustling streets, sample local cuisine at charming restaurants, enjoy the lively atmosphere, and soak in the town’s rich cultural heritage. Valladolid’s blend of vibrant colors, historic sites, and delicious food makes it a delightful destination to discover.

Dinner at Vagalume Tulum

After an adventurous day, we returned to the hotel to freshen up and dress for an evening out. We decided to head to Vagalume Tulum, a stylish beach club known for its vibrant ambiance and stunning oceanfront setting. The restaurant features a chic, bohemian design with cozy lounge areas, elegant dining spaces, and a large, inviting bar.

As the sun began to set, the energy shifted into high gear. The DJ’s deeper beats ignited the crowd, who danced in the sand, fully embracing Tulum’s golden hour. The sky transformed into a kaleidoscope of colors, and the beach radiated with a magical glow, perfectly capturing the carefree, joyful spirit of the day.

Don’t miss their wood-fired pizzas with inventive toppings, perfectly paired with tropical cocktails.

Day 5 – Swimming in Cenotes and Nest Dining

Breakfast bowl/smoothie at Matcha Mama

Stop by the Instagram-famous Matcha Mama for a vibrant and healthy start to your day. This café serves a delightful array of matcha lattes, smoothies, and bowls that are as nutritious as they are delicious. With its bright decor and relaxed vibe, it’s the perfect spot to catch up with friends or grab a refreshing snack before diving into your Tulum adventures.

Swim in a cenote at Atik Tulum Park

As you drive from Tulum Centro towards Valladolid, you’ll encounter a diverse array of cenotes to explore, each with its own unique features. We stopped at Atik Tulum Park, a relatively new cenote that is less crowded, offering a peaceful and uncrowded experience.

Atik Tulum Park offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and artistic charm. The park features a stunning cenote with crystal-clear waters, a picturesque waterfall, and lush greenery, creating a serene escape from the town’s hustle and bustle. It’s the perfect spot for a refreshing swim or a relaxing dip. The most exciting way to enter the cenote is by descending a ladder, adding a unique and adventurous touch to your visit.

After swimming, take the time to explore the park and marvel at the various art installations scattered throughout. Notably, there’s a striking display of numerous small skulls intricately arranged to create a compelling visual effect.

Snorkel with turtles at The Gran Cenote

Another popular spot along the way is Gran Cenote. With its crystal-clear turquoise waters, it’s perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The cenote features both open-air and cave sections, surrounded by lush greenery and striking rock formations. One of the highlights of Gran Cenote is snorkeling alongside turtles in the shallow waters. As you explore the darker cave areas, you might even spot bats roosting above. The sunlight filtering through the water creates a magical underwater scene, making Gran Cenote a truly unforgettable experience.

Nest dining at Kanan Rooftop

A trip to Tulum would be incomplete without trying one of its most unique dining experience —Nest Dining at Kanan Rooftop. You can choose from a 360-degree ocean view nest or a forest view nest, each requiring a minimum consumption credit that is applied to your reservation. But trust me, the experience is well worth it.
